THE days when those who disagree with the government are intimidated are over, going out together with the old Barisan Nasional regime, said Anwar Ibrahim.
But even though the PKR leader was all for freedom of expression, Anwar told The Star there was still a need to keep the conversation within appropriate limits.
“Malaysians should be able to articulate their views, albeit within reason,” Anwar said, as “there are lines that should not be crossed”.
“This is a difficult case, because who is going to decide that? And do we then represent the view that freedom of expression should be free for all?”
He noted that there was debate over where the demarcations should lie in a multiracial, multireligious country, which was where he said concerned citizens could help to define.
“But to go back to the old regime’s methods of intimidating people the moment they disagree with you is certainly out of the question,” he said.
