GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is looking forward to pitching several investment ideas to Chinese business magnate Jack Ma if he decides to visit the state following an invite by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said following Lim’s invite, he had written to Ma and formally invited him to take a look at Penang’s unique information technology ecosystem.
Chow said Penang was a great place for the Alibaba Group founder to invest in, as the state was famous with multinational companies from the information technology and e-commerce sectors.
“I have sent Ma a letter, we hope he will pay us a visit. When he is here, we will take him to look at our unique start-ups and our e-commerce ecosystem which has tremendous potential,” he said at Komtar today.
Earlier, Chow received a courtesy call from Chinese Embassy minister counsellor and deputy chief of mission Chen Chen.
Chow told Chen that Penang would welcome the participation of Chinese companies in infrastructure projects.
“We want the Chinese companies to share their expertise and know-how, and their ability to complete projects on-time and sometimes ahead of time,” he said.
Chen said China was interested in exploring cooperation in the field of construction, especially in the Penang Transport Master Plan and Flood Mitigation Projects.
“The Chinese government will support more Chinese enterprises with full capabilities to invest in Penang. That way, we can have more technology transfer and localisation at the same time,” he said.
Chen said China was the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2016, with numbers reaching RM700 million. He said there are about 30 Chinese companies which had invested in Penang.
On a different note, Chen allayed fears of reduced investments from China following the May 9 polls.
He said Sino-Malaysia relations would remain strong as it was carried out on the basis of “mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit”.
“So long as the cooperation is beneficial to both countries and its peoples, I have the full confidence that it will stand up to any test and will only change for the better.” -FMT
