His cabinet's Hari Raya open house today turned out to be a test of endurance for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, 93, who spent about a combined four hours shaking hands.
When the event was about to end at about 4.30pm, Mahathir addressed the visitors and said that the feat had taken a toll on his hand.
"I have shaken hands with about 55,000 visitors," said Mahathir, tongue clearly in cheek.
"I was afraid my hand would fall off but thank God, I was still able to do it."
According to organisers, some 80,000 people turned up for the event held at Sri Perdana, the prime minister's official residence in Putrajaya.
This is the first time in several years that the cabinet had a Hari Raya open house at Sri Perdana.
Up until last year and since Najib Abdul Razak became prime minister in 2009, the cabinet's open house events were held at PWTC in Kuala Lumpur which also houses Umno's headquarters.
Wellwishers at Sri Perdana today stood for hours in line to get up close to the new prime minister and wish him.
They were also presented with a door gift with a photo portrait of Mahathir and his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali. - Mkini
