Former Jelebu Umno Youth leader signs up at PPBM Youth's Hari Raya open house, weeks after his father had joined the party.
PETALING JAYA: Danni Rais, the son of former Cabinet minister Rais Yatim, joined PPBM’s youth wing today, as the party seeks to expand its presence in Negeri Sembilan.
A former Jelebu Umno youth leader, Danni signed up with the party at a Hari Raya open house organised by PPBM in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan.
“I’m excited about what the future holds and will work hard in building our party from the ground up,” said Danni, 31, who also heads a group called the Organisation for National Empowerment.
His decision to join the party, led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad, comes weeks after his father, former Umno strongman Rais Yatim, became a member.
Rais, who was the adviser for social and cultural affairs to the previous federal government, joined PPBM after he came under investigation by Umno for allegedly speaking up against the party.
An earlier announcement said Rais had been expelled, and although the party later clarified that Rais was being investigated under disciplinary rules, the incident angered Danni, who said it was like a “kick in the teeth” for a party servant who had been loyal for decades.
PPBM youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said the party leadership had planned to recruit Danni even before the May 9 general elections. “I’m extremely happy that it has now materialised,” said Saddiq, who was on hand to welcome Danni to the party. -FMT
