A businessperson cum blogger is set to take on acting president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the upcoming Umno party polls, reported the Malay Mail today.
According to the report, Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz, who tweets under the handle @MatUmno, submitted his application form to the party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today.
“I think that Umno needs new breath and energy to keep moving forward.
“The failure of past leaders must be taken into account to ensure Umno’s future survival,” the 46-year-old member of the Kota Raja division and Putra Heights branch was quoted as saying.
To date, Rahmat is the sole official contender against Zahid for the top post, with many senior party leaders only contesting for deputy president or the three vice-president posts.
Certain names have been touted as possible candidates for the presidency, including Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Hamzah and Jeli MP Mustapa Mohamed.
Rahmat also urged fellow young leaders to step forward and reinvigorate Umno after its disastrous showing at the recent general election.
“I am confident, and I know that Umno still has many young leaders with calibre, who are clean, sincere and hardworking.
“So I urge them to be brave and step forward, and together with me lead an Umno that will be reborn with new spirit and strength," he was quoted as saying. -Mkini
