KUALA LUMPUR: Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad (pic) has been acquitted and discharged by a Sessions Court here over a charge of making seditious statements about the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) and the Selangor Sultan.
Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah made the order on Thursday (June 7), ruling that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against Khalid.
The judge said the words used did not affect the powers of the Sultan and did not ruin the image of the Selangor Ruler.
The three-term MP was charged with uttering seditious statements during a press conference at the Parliament building at 11.30am on June 17, 2014.
Based on the charge sheet, the statements included requesting the Selangor government to carry out research for laws that allowed Mais to directly control the state’s religious authorities.
He allegedly said that Mais was seen to be closely associated to the Sultan of Selangor, and therefore its actions damaged the image of the royalty.
Another statement allegedly uttered was a call to return to a constitutional monarchy and to not give executive powers to the royalty as it could tarnish the royal institution.
Under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, Khalid faced up to three years in prison and a fine if convicted.- Star
