The wheel of justice has finally started to turn for Altantuya Shaariibuu and Teoh Beng Hock.
For some time, ordinary Malaysians like me have had a number of questions to ask regarding the trial of two operatives who were both bodyguards of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
In the case of Altantuya, what stood out was the sudden release of Najib’s close associate Abdul Razak Baginda on October 31, 2008. Ten years later, we are still asking what was Razak’s involvement in the murder of the Mongolian model.
At the same time, while both Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar Umar were both convicted of murder, they were both Najib’s operatives who had no real reason for the brutal murder that saw the body of Altantuya being blasted with C4 explosives.
The trial did not explain how the explosives were obtained but Najib was at the time the defence minister. At the same time, Najib’s former aide-de-camp, Deputy Superintendent Musa Safri was never called despite being an important witness; hence, the trial never went beyond the point of establishing who carried out the murder.
Two operatives had to suffer as a result, while the main people who contemplated murder got away. This is one reason many of were still dissatisfied with the outcome of the trial, not to mention that even the outcome of the Royal Commission of Inquiry for Teoh Beng Hock also did not disclose who were involved in what we still believe was a murder.
It is impossible for a young man to strangle himself in a ridiculous demonstration by Umno-linked lawyer, Shafee Abdullah. Teoh’s death was totally unnecessary considering that he was only a witness, and the amount used to purchase Malaysian flags was just a drop in the ocean.
There are many other cases that the police should start investigating again. We should not forget the Customs officer Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed who also fell to his death from the office of Selangor branch of MACC, AmBank founder, Hussain Najadi and deputy public prosecutor, Kelvin Morais.
