Suhaizan Kayat for Johor speaker?

Members of the Johor legislative assembly are set to be sworn in tomorrow, and state Amanah vice-chairperson Suhaizan Kayat is expected to be made its speaker.
Several Pakatan Harapan sources told Malaysiakini that DAP Penggaram assemblyperson Gan Peck Cheng will be chosen as Suhaizan's deputy.
"Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian will then (during swearing-in) nominate Suhaizan," a source said.
When contacted, both Suhaizan and Gan refused to comment, and told the reporter to wait until the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow.
Last Friday, Osman was reported as saying in Sinar Harian that there are two candidates for the speaker's position, and that Suhaizan is one of them.
"There are two names, wait until June 28. Maybe (Suhaizan), but anything can happen," the menteri besar said.
A Harapan insider told Malaysiakini that the coalition has unanimously offered support for Suhaizan to take up the mantle.
"The (extra) candidates for the position are just a smokescreen," he said.
Suhaizan is a former PAS Youth leader who started his political career in Johor.
He quit the Islamist party after the 2015 muktamar, and was among the founders of Amanah. He was subsequently appointed the splinter party's national organising secretary.
Despite his imminent appointment as speaker, Suhaizan does not sit on the state assembly.
In the 14th general election, Suhaizan contested the Kukup state seat, but lost to BN's Md Othman Yusoff by 862 votes. - Mkini
