Recall they awarded Obama the Nobel Peace Prize just a few weeks after he was first elected president. After getting the Nobel Peace Prize, Obama went on to bomb Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and he destroyed Libya and Syria totally. Along the way Obama killed hundreds of villagers in the Swat Valley and Waziristan through drone missile strikes. Obama just continued with the Western tradition of shedding human blood.
Now Donald Trump has become the first US President to meet and talk to a North Korean leader. Their meeting in Singapore has been a resounding success.
Here is the well regarded (ex CIA analyst) Ali Soufan of the Soufan Centre with his views on the Trump - Kim Summit.
THE SINGAPORE CONFERENCE
Bottom Line Up Front:
* On June 11, Trump and Kim Jong-un finished mini-summit in Singapore
* statement issued restates previous agreements, light on specifics
* notable concession from U.S., suspending military exercises with South Korea
* important component is how nations with nuclear ambitions will interpret event
first time U.S. president met with leader of North Korea
too few details to assess long-term outcomes of discussions
or effect on relations between South and North Korea
spectacle and rhetoric fits Trump and Kim's over-the-top statesmenship
U.S. and South Korea have framed the meeting as success
help with future negotiations for concrete, lasting change
statement signed restatement of previous agreements
Trump said U.S. ‘committed to provide security guarantees’
North Korea reaffirmed ‘unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization
Unexpectedly Trump declared U.S. suspending military exercises with South Korea
between South Korea and North such a step quite effective
An important component is how other nations will interpret its outcome.
For Iran nuclear weapons puts them in better negotiating position
optics of meeting on global efforts of nuclear nonproliferation—beyond North Korea
My comments :
The summit was a first meeting. But it has been love at first sight. Jatuh cinta dengan berjuta rasanya.
To make it last both Koreas must sign a peace treaty.
The United States fought the Korean War behind the camouflage of a United Nations mandate. So if there is going to be any peace treaty, it should re-involve the United Nations. And most obviously it has to be between the DPRK (the North) and South Korea.
But, we live in the real world. So let Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un sign the peace treaty (with South Korea playing the supporting role). Actually, at worst, a peace treaty should be signed between the North and South with the US playing a supporting role.
Just like East Germany and West Germany, both North and South Korea (as well as Malaysia and Singapore) have to be reunited.
If North Korea decides (most wisely) to go the way of East Germany and reunites immediately with South Korea that would be best for the Koreas. Remember all the Western detractors (especially in Britain) who said that West and East Germany should NOT reunite immediately?? Fortunately Chancellor Helmut Kohl said 'go to hell, we are reuniting now, today, immediately'.
But seeing that Kim Jong Un is a young man and has few other job options (or safe places to live) North Korea may have to suffer his presence a while longer.
When a Peace Treaty is signed between the North and the South. the peace has to be carefully managed.
The denuclearisation of Korea is so important.
Stopping the US-South Korean military exercises is also very important. It builds confidence and trust.
My view is US and Korean troops should pull back substantially from the 38th parrallel (the North Korea - South Korea border). The present DMZ (demilitarised zone) is 250 km long by 4km wide.
My view is the DMZ's width should be extended to say 200km on either side of the border.
There is some method to the madness. In the South the extended DMZ would cover Seoul and beyond. Towards the North it would also cover Pyonggyang.
A Peace Treaty would or should result in more people movement.
This is not the Persian-Arab conflict, the Jewish-Palestine conflict or the Bengali - Burmese conflict.
In Korea it is real, biologically related families divided by Cold War meddling. Korea is one country artificially divided into two. Just like the old East and West Germany.
A 200 km DMZ should also be declared a North-South Free Trade Area for say 10 years. For now, dont think beyond that. All Koreans can move around freely within this free trade area for business, investment and employment. I think they will reunite in no time.
Just some rumination on the last day of the fast. Marilah kita sama-sama berdoa semoga Allah swt memberkati segala hasrat baik orang Korea dan Donald Trump dan melimpahi karuniaNya ke atas semua penduduk Semenanjung Korea. Ameen ya Rabbil Alameen.
