The Johor monarchy has never taken from the rakyat and has, in fact, given its entire allocation from the state government to the people since 1899, the Johor palace said.
A statement posted on Tuesday on the official Facebook page of Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said the state's monarchy also had its own foundation, known as the Sultan Iskandar Foundation, to help the needy.
"Johor's Sultan Sir Ibrahim Sultan Abu Bakar had in the year 1899, donated his salary as the ruler, given by the state government, to the needy in Johor.
"The initiative was then continued and adjusted during the reign of the late Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail, where the funds were channelled to the Sultan Iskandar Foundation," said the statement.
It said that even when Sultan Iskandar served as the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong between 1984 and 1989, all of his salary and allowances received from the federal government were given to the foundation.
The clarification by the Johor palace comes in the wake of claims that about RM256.9 million was spent on the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad, in the 16 months since he became king.
The Johor palace further said the Sultan Iskandar Foundation not only assisted the poor but also funded education, disaster aid and computer literacy programmes.
It said the Johor royal family's revenue and income since the era of Sultan Sir Ibrahim came from plantation management as well as other businesses such as real estate.
"The current sultan, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, also has his own foundation to provide aid for education, charity, scholarships for poor students and medical assistance to senior citizens and the disabled.
"The funds for this foundation come from all royal allowances he receives," said the statement. - Mkini
