Former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz(above) has applauded the appointment of her former colleague Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus to lead the central bank.
Zeti said the appointment signified the Pakatan Harapan government’s respect for Bank Negara as an independent banking authority.
“This is an excellent decision by the government.
“It reflects the respect that the government has for the central bank as an important institution.
“Shamsiah was a former deputy governor while I was in office, and she knows all about central banking. (I’m sure) she will hit the ground running,” she told the press as she was leaving Menara Ilham in Kuala Lumpur today.
Zeti had earlier attended several meetings there as a member of the Council of Eminent Persons.
'Shamsiah knows all about central banking'
When asked if she had recommended Nor Shamsiah’s name to the government in the first place, Zeti smiled and said “no comment”.
Bank Negara had in recently been embroiled in a scandal involving an RM2 billion land transfer deal, supposedly to bail out troubled state strategic investment fund 1MDB.
Pressed if she thought Nor Shamsiah would be able to restore public confidence in the central bank, Zeti again emphasised the former’s expertise.
“I have full confidence in her performing in the position she has been appointed to.
“Because she knows all about central banking, she has more than 20-30 years experience,” she quipped.
Nor Shamsiah joined Bank Negara in 1987 and rose to become a deputy governor at the central bank for six years before she left in November 2016 when her term ended.
It was previously reported that she was closely involved in Bank Negara's inquiry into 1MDB in 2015 during Zeti’s tenure.
Shamsiah replaces Muhammad Ibrahim, who resigned from his position earlier this month.
Muhammad had taken over as Bank Negara governor from Zeti on May 1, 2016 and was supposed to serve a five-year term. - Mkini
