Anwar gets superstar endorsement from Indian celebrity

GEORGE TOWN: Anwar Ibrahim’s Port Dickson campaign took to the stars less than 24 hours from polling day with the endorsement of Indian actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, who described the PKR leader as “a beacon of hope”.
In a short video released last night, Kamal said the Port Dickson by-election would bring Anwar to Parliament where he “belonged”.
“In a global political climate that craves exemplary leaders who have a perfect understanding of underdogs, Anwar is that perfect example and beacon of hope,” he said.
“The constituency of Port Dickson has the opportunity to write a great chapter in the history of Malaysia by bringing Anwar back to Parliament and the nation at large, where he deserves to be.
“On this occasion, I am glad to wish Anwar and the people of Malaysia the very best as they embark on a new journey.”
Kamal also said he was very happy that his friend, Anwar, had been pardoned from an “unjust imprisonment”.
He said Anwar’s ascent would only fortify the Indo-Malaysian relationship while the “Tamil Nadu-Malaysia connection” would also grow from strength to strength.
Kamal, 63, is the secretary-general and founder of the Makkal Needhi Malam, which means the Peoples’ Justice Centre. His party, founded earlier this year, is planning to go big in the Tamil Nadu elections.
He was awarded India’s third and fourth highest civilian honours, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, for his contributions to the arts and society. The French also bestowed on him a Chevallier of the Order of Arts and Letters.
He is perhaps best known for his critically acclaimed movies, which have earned him a fan base rivalled only by that of fellow South Indian superstar Rajnikanth.
The Port Dickson seat was vacated by its MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah to pave the way for Anwar’s attempt to return to Parliament.
The by-election tomorrow will see a seven-way fight between Anwar, PAS’ Mohd Nazari Mokhtar and independents Isa Samad, Stevie Chan, Kan Chee Yuen, Lau Seck Yan and Saiful Bukhari Azlan. -FMT
