Indian-based party pledges support for PAS candidate

PD POLLS | Indian-based political party Indian Progressive Front (IPF) today expressed support for PAS in the Port Dickson by-election.
The party's vice-president S Visvanathan said the party, which is still a "strategic partner" of BN, will ask its 2,283 members in Port Dickson, who are also voters, to cast their votes for retired Air Force lieutenant colonel Mohd Nazari Mokhtar, come Oct 13.
"This is not a rushed decision. The decision to work with PAS was agreed to during the party's Central Working Committee meeting last Sunday.
"Not only in this by-election, but we will also work with PAS again in the future," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.
Visvanathan cited two reasons for IPF to cooperate with PAS.
"Firstly, at the PAS muktamar, the party had invited us to form a new coalition, together with Umno and MIC. We welcome the invite.
"Secondly, PAS had a meeting with only IPF, asking us to campaign for them," said Visvanathan, who is also the Negeri Sembilan IPF chairperson.
He added that IPF members will be mobilised to conduct house-to-house campaigning, particularly at Indian voters' households in Port Dickson, to attract support for PAS.
Malaysiakini understands that PAS Supporters Wing (DHPP) held a meeting with Negeri Sembilan IPF members earlier this evening regarding the cooperation.
The meeting was led by DHPP chief N Balasubramaniam and its secretary S Barathidasan.
Earlier, Negeri Sembilan Gerakan expressed support for Pakatan Harapan candidate Anwar Ibrahim, according to China Press.
Anwar reportedly met a group of 120 members and leaders led by Gerakan state chief David Choong on Oct 8.
The Chinese daily reported that both parties agreed to cooperate in the by-election with 2,072 Gerakan members in Port Dickson voting for Anwar.
Choong was quoted as saying that he would take full responsibility should there be any action taken by the Gerakan leadership.
Gerakan was a component party of BN but quit the coalition following the latter's colossal defeat in the 14th general election. - Mkini
