KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has turned down an invitation by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to join him in a forum.
“Tak payahlah (there is no need). Tomorrow night I am headed to Port Dickson, but not to have a forum with him.
“I am going there to campaign for Anwar Ibrahim (Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Port Dickson by-election),” Mahathir said after delivering the keynote address at a dinner organised by the United Nations Association Malaysia (UNAM) tonight.
Mahathir was commenting on a remark by Hadi during a press conference at the PAS headquarters in Teluk Kemang, Negeri Sembilan, today, where the PAS president said he had no problems with the prime minister’s visit to Port Dickson.
Hadi, who is Marang MP, reportedly said that it would be better still if Mahathir would join him in a forum.
Asked if he was not willing to engage with Hadi, Mahathir merely repeated that there was no need for it.
However, he added that this could be done another time.
Mahathir is expected to be in Port Dickson tomorrow to campaign for Anwar in an attempt to dispel the perception of a rift between the two.
Polling for the by-election has been fixed on October 13.
