Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has slammed the overselective attitude of some Malaysians when it comes to choosing jobs, to the extent of being unwilling to work under the hot sun.
Thus, the country is forced to rely on foreign labour, he said.
"If some think that it is hot and uncomfortable to work during the day time, the government is thinking if it's alright to change the working hours tonight.
"It is indeed dark at night, but now we see people playing golf with the help of bright lights.
"So we can cultivate paddy during the night. Just install bright lights, no hot sun," he quipped in his speech at a Bersatu function in Segambut tonight.
Mahathir said although it would be difficult for the people to accept the change of hours, in the beginning, they would eventually get used to it.
"As we know, in some country, during the fasting month, the people sleep during the daytime and work at night.
"So working at night is not unusual to us. We can use LED lights now, it saves electricity," he said.
The premier also urged the people to work for a living, instead of hoping for handouts.
"It is despicable if we get money without working. If we work and get paid for it, it is noble and halal.
"Free money without work is mostly from illicit means," said the nonagenarian.
According to him, there are about seven million foreign workers in the country, currently, and they send back an annual sum of approximately RM60 billion to their home countries. - Mkini
