Ahead of Ummah rally, Muhyiddin warns of action over religious slurs

Ahead of a rally "to defend Islam" this Saturday, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has warned that police will take stern action against those who insult any religion.
Commenting on the rally organised by Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah), Muhyiddin said he saw the demonstration as a possible attempt to incite Muslims.
"(This rally) appears inclined to fan racial and religious sentiments, especially among Muslims.
"As the home minister, the ministry through the police will not hesitate to take stern action in accordance with the law towards anyone who insults any religion," Muhyiddin said at a joint interview in Putrajaya today.
He also said that no one should abuse their positions to create havoc or ill feelings and hatred among the various races and religions.
Critics of the Pakatan Harapan government claim that the sanctity of Islam had become threatened since they took over Putrajaya.
Muhyiddin, however, rubbished this assertion.
He said police had investigated 53 cases of insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad after which eight individuals had been charged in court.
"Besides that, the position of Islam as the official religion is also enshrined in the Federal Constitution which will not be changed.
"So claims that the position and sanctity of Islam are threatened under the Harapan administration are not true at all," he said.
He advised all Malaysians to always look after racial and religious harmony and not be influenced by certain groups who wish to seek political gain by stoking racial and religious issues.
Besides defending Islam, Ummah says this Saturday's rally at Dataran Merdeka will also take aim at the Rome Statute, the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassima and the United Examination Certificate (UEC) issue among others. - Mkini
