ANWAR Ibrahim tonight called on Sandakan folk to vote for a representative who stands with a government committed to reform.
The PKR president said Pakatan Harapan needs to be bold to move forward with the reforms, after successfully ousting a corrupt regime.
“Now we have to move on. At first they called for need-based policies – since the Malays are poor, we should help them first.
“I said no. If a person is poor then he is poor, regardless of his race and we have to help him.
“This is the PH government’s stand and this is what the DAP Sandakan by-election candidate stands for.
“Although she is contesting under the DAP rocket symbol, she is still part of the PH,” he said at a ceramah in Bandar Prima, Mile 4, Sandakan.
Anwar said PH needs to be strong and get rid of outdated and corrupt policies and govern the country properly.
He said the former government had rewarded those who were corrupt, and that he knew of some people who had stolen money from the government and grabbed land “walloped” government contracts who were nonetheless awarded the title of “Tan Sri”.
Anwar also hit out at those who said the PH federal government has failed after one year in power.
He said PH’s biggest success was defeating the corrupt in the polls last year and breaking their continued grip on power.
Anwar said PH’s second biggest success is the non-corruptibility of its ministers and MPs, who are required to declare their assets
The Port Dickson MP said the government is swamped with problems that need attention and a year is not enough time to solve them all.
For example, he said, the security problem on the Sabah east coast is hampering trade in the region.
Anwar said he will meet Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Sabah Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal to address the problem immediately as delay will cause the economy. to suffer.
“Barter trade has to continue. Security must be number one priority so there will be no more kidnapping for ransom and cross-border crime.”
Migrants who have lived in Sabah for decades must be given papers, says Anwar
THE Pakatan Harapan government will keep up its policy of legitimising the status of migrants who have lived for many years in Sabah, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
“The position of the government on the issue of stateless people and migrants who have lived in the state for decades is that they should be given proper papers,” he said today during a walkabout in Sandakan town on the by-election campaign trail.
Anwar is in town to campaign for the PH candidate for the Sandakan federal seat, Vivian Wong.
Sabah is home to 1.15 million foreigners, who make up a little under a third of Sabah’s 3.9 million population. About 70% of the foreigners are illegal immigrants, according to the State Immigration Department.
Sabah politicians have repeatedly raised concern over the inflow of illegal immigrants to the state, which the locals fear would changSabah’s demographics.
Many of the immigrants arrived in Sabah in the 1970s, fleeing unrest in the southern Philippines.
In the 1990s there were allegations that the then federal government had tried to make them Malaysian citizens through dubious means such as Projek IC.
Anwar, who is the Port Dickson MP, is in Sabah to campaign for DAP’s candidate Vivian Wong in the Sandakan by-election.
