Enter a Whimsy-cal universe without leaving the dinner table

Whimsy takes the fine-dining experience to a whole new dimension.
Imagine indulging in an epicurean adventure that is multi-sensory in every sense of the word.“Whimsy – A Dining Experience” is as the name suggests – a whimsical fine-dining adventure that’s truly immersive and interactive, and which to a large extent, pleasantly defies reality.
Through state-of-the-art 360-projection technology diners are rocketed into outer space, dunked underwater, taken on a wild jungle safari ride and dropped right in the midst of a carnival site, all without leaving the dinner table.
In fact, this whimsical adventure begins the moment you step into the dining room and are guided to your seat at the table by the plate onto which your name is projected. How’s that for a personal touch?
Guests’ names are projected on the table at their assigned seats.
FMT had the privilege of experiencing Whimsy firsthand, and what a surreal and memorable event that turned out to be.
The evening began with a ‘Big Bang’, pun intended, the instant the dining room was drenched in darkness, transporting diners straight onto the magical Milky Way.
Michellin-starred Chef Jeff Ramsey.
Host Daniella announced the first course for the evening – Biodome. Prepared with precision by renowned Michelin-starred Chef Jeff Ramsey, the smoked duck on squid ink risotto tantalised the taste buds and fascinated with its differing textures leaving everyone feeling rather star-struck.
Diners get a taste of space with Biodome: Smoked duck, lentil salad, Moon Rock squid ink risotto, and pesto with Roselle Geodesic Bubbles.
After the entree, each diner was handed an iPad and instructed to face it in the direction of their respective horoscopes to read their star signs.
In a flash, diners found themselves in an enchanted jungle complete with birds chirping, crickets singing and twigs snapping as 3D-projected roots gently coiled themselves around the table and onto the diners’ plates, leaving everyone pretty dumbfounded.
‘The Nest’ was as surreal as it was sumptuous.
Complementing this jungle habitat, the second course was served in a bird’s nest and called very simply “The Nest”.
A single egg called 63 Egg, meaning poached at 63 degrees, was accompanied by a side of asparagus, a showering of parmesan cheese, mushroom duxelles and chicken juice, making this particular course earth-shatteringly good.
Diners had to work a little to earn their next dish. After dutifully “tapping” on a block of ice projected onto the table, they were transported to the next dimension – the deep blue sea.
A scene from ‘The Sea’ thrills diners no end.
Chef Ramsey’s take on the “The Sea” consisted of a combination of roast scallops, Japanese turnip, Samphire and Red Ogo Seaweed. Never one to disappoint with presentation, this meal was served in a seashell adorned with pretty corals on the side.
The rich flavour of the scallops combined with the sweetness of the other components of the dish made for a memorable seafood course.
Popcorn and Chocolate – an unusual but delightful mix of sweet and savoury.
From the depths of the sea, diners found themselves in the midst of a bustling and colourful carnival, complete with vibrant lights and the excited sounds of a funfair in full swing.
Even more breathtaking than this 3D animation, was the “Popcorn and Chocolate” course that followed.
A delectable mix of pan-seared foie gras with chocolate-perfumed jus dan free-range chicken with popcorn sauce, this dish was an exquisite mix of sweet and savoury flavours expertly blended together.
A scene in Disney’s Tangled is re-created with 3D lanterns illuminating the room.
Before the last course of the night was served, diners were once again handed an iPad, and told to list their wishes, dreams and hopes.
Not really sure where this was heading, everyone did as instructed and were awestruck later to see their individual wishes projected onto the many 3D lanterns illuminating the room.
Reminiscent of a scene from the Disney movie Tangled, there were audible “oohs” and “ahhs” with many exclaiming that this experience truly fit the expectations of a fantastical grand finale.
‘The Egg’ is a cheeky little dessert with a hidden secret.
The last dish, simply named “The Egg” was made of white chocolate, praline and dark chocolate fuilletine, vanilla cream paté and served with a cluster of fresh fruit.
Much like an Easter Egg, diners tapped lightly on the delicate shell to uncover the velvety ice cream hiding inside.
The tartness of the fruits were a good balance to the richness of the vanilla cream paté and dark chocolate fuilletine, making this a truly sinful and delicious end to an awe-inspiring evening.
For those interested in having a Whimsy experience of their own, bear in mind that there are only 10 seats allocated for each five-course, 90-minute session. The minimum age requirement is seven years old.
Pricing per person for a “Gold Journey” starts at RM299, with a “Platinum Journey” priced at RM499.
To be part of the Whimsy Universe, make your reservations at https://whimsy.com.my/ or through the ticket counter at Skyland, Bukit Bintang.

Whimsy is brought to you by 2spicy Entertainment, the same company that brought “Dinner In The Sky”, “Plane In The City” and “Le Petit Chef”. - FMT
