Fresh from his release from a month-long jail sentence, lawyer Arun Kasi says he will now fight for prison reform.
"I feel there was a reason God sent me to jail, there was a purpose to this," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.
"I think now there is a lot I can do in the context of prison life, (as) prisoners could be facing challenges, such as with their basic necessities.
"This was an opportunity to experience this life for 30 days, and I think I can contribute a lot to the betterment of prison life. Very soon, I will be working on that."
Arun also urged the Bar Council to set up a prison welfare committee, as it is a very important aspect of human rights.
The lawyer was freed today after spending 30 days in prison for contempt of court over a statement pertaining to a court judgement. The Federal Court also imposed an RM40,000 fine.
He was accused of making contemptuous statements online, in relation to the Federal Court expunging a dissenting judgment by Court of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer in the case of Leap Modulation Sdn Bhd vs PCP Construction Sdn Bhd.
He previously asserted that his comments constituted fair criticism.
As Arun told Malaysiakini, he is currently discussing a review application to the Federal Court with his lawyers.
However, he said he is still waiting for the CRT recordings (court recording transcription) of the earlier proceeding, which he requested last month.
"We will need the CRT recordings for an effective review application," he said. - Mkini
