MIC deputy president M Saravanan has urged de facto Islamic Affairs Minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa to exclude Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields from his proposal to rename a road there as Jalan Harmoni.
"MIC had put a lot effort to have the road named Jalan Tun Sambanthan and now they (the Pakatan Harapan government) want to change it to other name.
"So if the minister wants to change the name of a road in the area, please don't involve Jalan Tun Sambanthan."
Jalan Tun Sambanthan was known as Jalan Brickfields before its name was changed in 1982, after the late VT Sambanthan who was the fifth MIC president, and played a prominent role in our nation's formative years.
Free Malaysia Today reported that Mujahid came out with the idea to name of the roads in Brickfields as Jalan Harmoni to reflect unity.
The area is home to several houses of worship.
"Why not change the names of other roads such as Jalan Scott, Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, Jalan Thambipillai, Jalan Berhala or Jalan Padang Belia?
"Moreover, it is apt to change the name of Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad because temples and mosque are located along this stretch," he said.
It is learned that Mujahid will meet the Federal Territory Minister Khalid Abdul Samad to discuss the Jalan Harmoni proposal.
In 2010 Brickfields was dubbed the title "Little India." -Mkini
