Muhyiddin seeks to give Home Ministry a 'caring' make-over

INTERVIEW | Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin wants to change the public's perception of his ministry, from one that is harsh and full of abuses, to one that is concerned and humane.
"It will take a bit of time. But surely and steadily, hopefully by introducing the change of standard operating procedures that we're trying to introduce, so that we are more caring, more concerned, and more humanitarian in our approach.
"I think that would be good for the country," he said during a recent joint interview in Putrajaya.
Muhyiddin said this when asked about whether he has succeeded in changing the mentality of those under the Home Ministry, such as the police, to be on the side of truth and justice.
The minister added that one of the other areas, where the ministry is trying to be more humane, is by amending security laws in the country which are deemed draconian.
"They must not be too punitive, cruel. That is why we are looking into it, to make it more humane," he said.
The ministry is expected to table reforms to the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) and the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) in the next parliamentary session.
Muhyiddin said other laws such as the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) and Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) are still under review.
However, while there is a push to amend laws, Muhyiddin said taking preventive measures may be a necessity in some situations.
"People in my ministry are seen as harsh, for taking action (against people), but it's not quite true all the time.
"There is a need to show concern for any issue you face in society. There is also a role for you to intervene before certain things happen.
"Actions need to be taken before certain things happen, before any crisis or problems arise, where it is not easy for us to manage compared to if we had managed it much earlier," he stressed.
Muhyiddin said efforts to reduce the crime rate and improve public perception of police were ongoing, as are efforts to secure Malaysia's borders, and to tackle the influx of undocumented migrants. - mkini
