KUALA LUMPUR: PAS today pleaded with Putrajaya to not deport Dr Zakir Naik, the controversial Indian preacher who was recently charged with money laundering.
Its deputy president, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, said even though Naik was accused of acquiring about Rs1.9 billion (RM114.5 million) worth of criminal assets, he would like the federal government to protect Naik.
“Please do not ever send him back to India,” he told a crowd of over 1,000 at a rally here this afternoon.
Naik, who is currently in Malaysia, was charged in absentia in a court in Mumbai.
India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) said of the total, it had identified properties worth Rs50.4 million (RM3 million).

The agency also told the court that Naik had made “inflammatory speeches and lectures” which incited a number of Muslim youths in India to commit terrorist acts.
Naik has strongly denied the accusations against him.
Yesterday, when asked if Putrajaya would assist the Indian government by sending Naik back to face charges, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said they “will study the matter based on legal provisions”.
Earlier, Tuan Ibrahim told the crowd that a memorandum would be submitted to the king, the Conference of Rulers and Parliament over several issues.
This included over the Rome Statute, the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, who died in a riot sparked by the relocation of a temple last year, as well as the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC). - FMT
