Police will be investigating the Ummah rally held in downtown Kuala Lumpur today under the Peaceful Assembly Act over the organiser's paperwork.
Dang Wangi district police chief Mohd Fahmi Visuvanthan said the organisers had failed to submit to police a letter from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) giving them permission to hold their rally.
"The rally was peaceful without incident but we have to look into this as even though the organisers had informed the police as required by law, they were supposed to attach a response from DBKL," Mohd Fahmi told Malaysiakini.
When contacted, Ummah secretariat chairperson Aminuddin Yahya (below) said he was unperturbed by the probe and admitted to not getting permission from DBKL.
"No problem if they want to investigate. We did submit (an application) to DBKL but we didn't get a response which is why we didn't submit it (to the police).
"If the police want to investigate that's okay. What is important was that there wasn't a riot," said Aminuddin.
Today's rally was billed as a demonstration to "defend Islam" as well as to voice out concerns over the Rome Statute, the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, the United Examination Certificate (UEC) issue and other related matters.
Malaysiakini estimates that some 1,000 people turned out for the rally while police placed the number at around 3,500. Ummah claimed a turnout of 10,000. - Mkini
