SANDAKAN POLLS | Bung Moktar Radin's promise to deliver 9,700 Umno votes for PBS in the Sandakan by-election has become a source of concern for Sabah DAP.
Although sceptical of the numbers, its secretary Chan Foong Hin (above) is not taking chances.
He said DAP is appealing to its voters to come out in droves to counter the threat posed by the Sabah Umno chief.
“Yes, we are worried. So we urge our supporters – please come to vote... Don't sit in air-conditioned rooms thinking DAP would win. There is no such thing as a sure win in Sandakan.
“A vote for DAP is a vote for reformation and 'New Malaysia',” the Kota Kinabalu MP told the media today.
However, Chan is also confident that Warisan's grassroots could match that of Umno among the Muslim bumiputera in the constituency.
“I also believe in our coalition partner - Warisan. They have a strong base which would not be worse than Umno's,” he added.
Yesterday, Bung (photo), who made his first appearance on the campaign trail, told a ceramah that Sabah Umno would mobilise its supporters to vote for PBS candidate Linda Tsen in Saturday's contest.
In the last election, DAP lost the Sabah Muslim bumiputera-majority polling districts of Kampung Sim-Sim and Pulau Berhala to BN-LDP.
However, it won in the other 15 Chinese-majority polling districts.
DAP is fielding Vivian Wong, who is the daughter of the late Sandakan incumbent MP Stephen Wong, who died in March.
Apart from Vivian and Tsen, there are also three independent candidates Hamzah Abdullah, Sulaiman Abdul Samat and Chia Siew Yung. -Mkini
