Sabah Umno leader: Our ties with PAS different from peninsula’s

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Umno-PAS working relationship is different from that of the peninsula, state Umno deputy chief Yakub Khan said.
Unlike in West Malaysia, where the two parties have formed an alliance to fight against Pakatan Harapan in by-elections, the relationship here is based on the understanding that both parties are in the opposition bloc.
“And of course, with Umno and PAS having Islam as their core, both parties need each other,” he told FMT.
“But the concept does not mean we are sidelining people of other races and religions.”
At a breaking of fast event organised by Sabah Umno’s Zone 2 here yesterday, history was made when PAS and Umno leaders sat at the same table for the first time, Yakub said.
The event was attended by Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin, Sabah PAS commissioner Mohd Aminuddin Aling and Sabah PAS secretary Aliakbar Gulasan.
Yakub said both parties had been involved in several joint programmes previously but they were not publicised.
Sabah Umno Wanita chief Jainab Ahmad Ayid said the state’s political landscape is different from that of Peninsular Malaysia.
“We are open-minded to work with any opposition party in the state that wants to cooperate with our party or Barisan Nasional.
“Sabah Umno is not a racist party. We work with PAS but we have our own autonomy,” she said, adding that the state chapter is free to chart its own course to regain the people’s trust. - FMT
