Subsidies for fresh grads? No decision made yet, says Dr M

Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
PUTRAJAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today confirmed media reports that a proposal had been made to provide a subsidy for fresh graduates to encourage them to take up jobs which they had previously shunned due to low wages.
The prime minister said the proposal was to subsidise the workers through the companies that employed them.
“We received a proposal, but no decision was made,” he said at the launch of the Boce Malaysia-Asean digital e-commerce platform here today.
The proposal, Mahathir revealed, was for an indirect subsidy to be provided which will see an increase in income.
This, he said, could attract more Malaysians to take up jobs and reduce the country’s dependency on foreign workers, which he added had caused the country to lose billions in ringgit due to the outflow of money.
Quoting sources, Sin Chew Daily reported that Putrajaya wanted to provide RM6 billion in allowances and salary subsidies for fresh graduates to help youths obtain employment.
According to the daily’s source, the government was considering providing an allowance of between RM700 and RM1,000 for fresh graduates.
Yesterday, Mahathir urged Malaysians to take up the dirty, dangerous and difficult (3D) jobs, rather than remain jobless, adding that even though the pay was low, it was better than having no income.
Police and the IPCMC
When asked to comment on outgoing Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun’s statement that police had rejected the proposal to set up the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), Mahathir said there were quarters who were against such a commission.
“But there are those who are for it. So we will always listen to public opinion and then make a decision.”
Earlier today, Fuzi said police will meet with Mahathir to submit its protests over several issues concerning the IPCMC. - FMT
