KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is set to become the first university in the country to establish a Unicef-based initiative delving into issues pertaining to the development of women and children.
UMS and Unicef inked an agreement yesterday.
This will see the establishment of a Communication for Development (C4D) research unit — only the second such unit in the Asean region after Thailand’s Dhurakij Pundit University.
UMS vice-chancellor Prof D Kamarudin D Mudin said the unit would provide consultation services and training.
The unit would be part of a vast network of C4D units around the world.
“The unit will promote C4D as a cross-cutting strategy in the implementation of social development projects,” he said.
He said this after exchanging agreements with Unicef’s deputy representative to Malaysia, Rodaslaw Rzheak here.
Kamarudin said UMS would provide a platform for operations and human resources, consisting of academicians, while Unicef would provide a starting grant and its expertise.
In thanking Unicef for the opportunity, he said the grant, which amounts to RM300,000, would be used for capacity building related to women and children’s development issues.
C4D is an approach by Unicef to support social development projects, including in agriculture, education, health and poverty eradication. - FMT
