'What is PBS?' - Anwar sees Sandakan as Harapan-BN battleground

SANDAKAN POLLS | PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has characterised this Saturday's by-election for Sandakan as a battleground between Pakatan Harapan and the Umno-PAS pact.
"What is PBS? This is a battleground between Pakatan Harapan and BN, the main parties being Umno and PAS," Anwar told a ceramah crowd in Bandar Prima last night.
"You in Sandakan have to decide whether you want this country to take care of the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans and Kadazans, or just the Malays only."
Anwar also pointed out that the Harapan government aims to implement needs-based policies regardless of race.
"The last time when I was in Penang, there was a Chinese man pedalling a trishaw, and I asked him to take me somewhere.
"He was pedalling the trishaw, but what do we call him? Tauke (boss).
"That is why Umno used to say there is no need to help the Chinese because they are tauke, but this is wrong," he said.
The roughly 1,500 attendees – mostly Chinese – at last night's ceramah made it the biggest crowd thus far in the by-election campaign for the parliamentary seat.
After Anwar stepped off the ceramah stage, the emcee asked the crowd to hold up their mobile phones with the flashlights turned on for a photo opportunity, to which they obliged.
PBS is fielding its vice-president Linda Tsen against DAP candidate Vivian Wong in the Sandakan by-election, which was triggered by the death of the Wong's father and the then MP, Stephen Wong.
Various opposition parties have pledged their support for PBS in this by-election, including Sabah Umno, PAS, Usno and Star.
Other speakers at the ceramah last night included DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, DAP national chairperson Tan Kok Wai, Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming, Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham and Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong.
Polling day is set for May 11.  - Mkini
