PETALING JAYA: Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan has brushed off veteran politician Lim Kit Siang’s challenge to bet on Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s succession plan.
Lim had said he is prepared to lay down a wager to Mohamad, who is referred to as Tok Mat, that Mahathir will keep his word and pass the baton to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Lim, in a statement today, said he will retire from politics if the succession plan fails and that Tok Mat should do the same if Mahathir keeps his word to pass the prime minister’s post to Anwar.
He gave Tok Mat two days to decide whether to accept the wager.
“Furthermore, it is now the fasting month. I do not bet,” he said.
During his ceramah in Sandakan, Tok Mat said he knows Mahathir’s character and that the latter is unlikely to relinquish the post to Anwar.
Tok Mat was also reported as saying that Mahathir will not keep his promise and dissolve Parliament to make way for the 15th general election as early as the end of next year.
“What I said is my prediction and my understanding. He (Kit Siang) can have his own prediction and understanding. It is up to him,” he said.
Lim said PH’s first anniversary was a shock to Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders who had hoped that the Pakatan Harapan coalition would crumble in a matter of months after GE14.
“Now, they are hoping that Pakatan Harapan will crumble and disintegrate with Mahathir refusing to pass the prime minister’s post to Anwar,” Lim added in his statement.
On Wednesday, Mahathir reiterated that he will hand over power to Anwar Ibrahim as planned. However, he did not state when exactly Anwar would take over.
“I don’t know whether it is three years or two years, but I am an interim prime minister,” Singapore’s The Straits Times reported.
