A hacker has managed to take control of Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad’s Telegram account.
Malaysiakini discovered this when the hacker contacted one of its journalists – the writer – in an attempt to carry out a scam.
According to “Khalid”, he had spoken to Inland Revenue Board CEO Sabin Samitah, and found out that the writer was under investigation and would soon have his assets frozen.
“(Sabin) mentioned to me in confidence that they are investigating you and will freeze all your accounts and cease your assets in the coming days.
“I would have called you but I am keeping all my confidential discussions on telegram. This is because as a minister some of my normal phone calls may be monitored sometimes. So we keep this on telegram,” the hacker texted.
The hacker then offered to help, and said he would discuss the matter with the IRB boss over dinner.
The writer was asked to disclose his salary, to which the writer replied with a fake amount.
The hacker then asked the writer to delete his WhatsApp account.
This appeared to be part of an attempt to take over the writer’s WhatsApp account, as moments later the writer received a text message for a WhatsApp verification code.
The hacker had asked the writer to send them the code to establish a “private call” with him.
As of writing, the writer is still waiting for the call.
The real Khalid, in a call to Malaysiakini, confirmed that his Telegram account was hacked.
“They said they have spoken to IRB and will warn that your account will be frozen. Then they’ll try to extort you for money,” he said.
Khalid said he is lodging a police report over the matter tomorrow.
The writer is a responsible taxpayer and made his income declaration early in March.
