SEPANG – Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan today defended a “fatwa” (religious edict) issued by PAS calling for members to topple the Pakatan Harapan administration, saying the Islamist party did nothing wrong.
Mohamad, who is also the party’s acting president, said PAS members needed to be guided by their leaders.
“Don’t misconstrue a fatwa. It is merely a guide,” he told reporters after officiating the Umno Sepang delegate meeting here today.
The fatwa was issued by the head of the PAS Dewan Ulama, Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, at the recently-concluded PAS muktamar (general assembly) in Kuantan, Pahang.
He said it was compulsory for PAS members to topple the current Pakatan Harapan administration.
This led to Amanah president Mohamad Sabu criticising PAS for issuing a fatwa, saying they were playing the religious card. He said the party had a penchant to alter edicts it issues, and noted that PAS had previously issued a fatwa against working with Umno.
Ties between PAS and Umno have since thawed, with the two parties joining forces in the past by-elections.
However today Mohamad said the fatwa did not apply to Umno members as the two parties were different entities. “We are just working with them, not consolidating. It doesn’t mean we have to follow everything PAS does.”
