PIBG lodges police report over pollution fears after school covered in haze

Students leaving school yesterday wearing face masks.
SUNGAI PETANI: The parent-teacher association (PIBG) of a school in Kedah has lodged a police report over what appears to be smog emanating from a nearby factory which has caused breathing difficulties among students.
Christina Lai, chairman of the SJK (C) Tai Tong PIBG, said she lodged the report at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters, asking for an immediate investigation into the situation.
She told FMT the school had been enveloped in a thick, pungent haze.
“It smells like burnt plastic and has caused students to have teary eyes, asthma and headaches,” she said.
“How are we to study in an environment like this?”
Adding that the school authorities have lodged an official complaint with the Department of Environment, Lai said nearly all of the 426 pupils have had to don face masks as a result of the haze.

A parent who did not want to be identified said his eight-year-old son had been having dry eyes for a week and had developed an upper respiratory tract infection.
“Even my son’s teacher has been suffering from dry eyes,” he said.
“Now I am thinking twice over whether I want to send my kid to school.”
The Kuala Muda police confirmed receiving Lai’s report and said an investigation has been launched. - FMT
