PETALING JAYA: The 5G network implementation policy will be presented to the Cabinet before the end of March, according to communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said he has met officials of the finance ministry, telecommunications companies, and Digital Nasional Bhd to get their feedback.

“Discussions about the (policy’s) direction still need a little more time,” he said.

“We have received feedback from all parties, and the communications and digital ministry as well as the finance ministry are currently examining the potential impact of any option that we take.

“I expect that we will be able to present it to the Cabinet before the end of the first quarter of 2023.

“From there, I believe the government will announce the implementation policy for the 5G network,” he told reporters after attending a meeting with communications and digital ministry officials from Kelantan.

DNB, 100% owned by the Minister of Finance (Inc), is responsible for building and managing the 5G network and acts as the single wholesale provider of 5G services.

Last week, Fahmi asked DNB to clarify a statement that the country’s 5G network currently covers 50% of populated areas, adding that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has yet to verify the information.

This came after DNB said it has achieved more than 90% coverage of populated areas throughout Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor as well as some 50% across cities and towns in Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. - FMT
