KUALA LUMPUR: A new system is in the works to speed up counter services at offices of the road transport department (JPJ), says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

He said today he would be announcing details of the new system after the Chinese New Year. “It will be much easier and faster,” he said, referring to the process of renewing road tax, vehicle certification, and motor and driving licences.

“Imagine renewing your road tax or driving licence through an app on your mobile phone. It is easy and fast, and can be done in your own time.

“No waiting for counter service and waiting in long queues. The transport ministry and JPJ are working towards this direction,” he said.

Loke said the ministry was looking into digitalisation as a way to reduce crowds at JPJ offices, without compromising on security.

He said the ministry would conduct its feasibility studies and hoped it could work something out and achieve a win-win situation for all.

Loke said JPJ has increased the number of kiosks in many branches throughout the country to make the process of renewing road tax and driving licences even easier, smoother and faster.

Service hours for kiosks have also been extended. - FMT
