‘Pulau’ is a horror movie and not porn as some had alleged, the Film Censorship Board (LPF) said.
In a statement, the agency under Home Ministry said they have reviewed the movie, which was submitted for LPF approval.
It was found that the content of the movie had some differences compared to its promotional trailer which had gone viral on social media recently and caught controversy, the board added.
“LPF takes note of the issue regarding a movie titled ‘Pulau’, which had caught the attention of the public after its posters and trailer were shared via social media.
“The trailer for the film was posted online, which is not under LPF jurisdiction.
“‘Pulau’ is a horror film and not pornographic as alleged. LPF found that there were also differences in the content used in the trailer and the actual movie which was submitted for our review,” the statement said.
Saying that they welcome all feedback and constructive views regarding film censorship in the country, LPF also stressed that it is always sensitive to the sociocultural norm in Malaysia and does its film reviews according to existing guidelines.
The movie came under the spotlight in the past few days after it was alleged to contain obscene materials.
Among those who criticised ‘Pulau’ was former deputy religious affairs minister Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, who claimed that the horror thriller “contains scenes that are obscene and excessive”.
Following this, filmmaker WebTVAsia had urged the public not to judge ‘Pulau’ based on its trailer alone and before watching the movie, which is due to be released on March 9. - Mkini
