Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has taken a jibe at his deputy president Mohamad Hasan for allegedly hiding behind Negeri Sembilan delegate Mohd Shukri Samsudin’s proposal to leave the top two positions in the party uncontested in the upcoming party polls.
Khairy, in a TikTok video today, revealed that Shukri is from the party’s Rembau division and expressed bewilderment that the motion came from a division led by Mohamad.
"This is weird because the deputy president (Mohamad) himself is the head of the Rembau division.
"If you want to bring this sort of additional motion, cover la sikit (do it more discreetly). What happened to you, Mat Hasan?”
Khairy was referring to Shukri's motion proposing that the positions of Umno president and deputy president not be contested in the next party election, which has to be held by May 19.
Shukri put forth the additional motion when he was debating the president's policy speech on Friday afternoon.
Khairy added that while the motion is being debated, he was heartened to hear delegates from the Federal Territories and Johor who were still brave to respect the democratic rights of the delegates.
‘Voting session will be bulldozed’
Meanwhile, in the four-minute social media video, Khairy claimed that the voting session, which will be held this evening, on the motion not to have a contest for the posts of president and deputy president at the party election will be “bulldozed”.
“In fact, some tags on the seats in Dewan Merdeka that are reserved for division delegates have been removed so that ‘imported delegates’ can be brought in to cheer and bulldoze the motion,” he claimed.
Therefore, he called on the delegates present in the hall not to vote in favour of the motion as it is pertinent for them to be given the freedom to elect and choose the next future party leadership.
“I guarantee that the election of the top two posts would not lead to disunity within the party.
“Whoever wins will get the mandate from the party. Whoever wins, we will support and put our differences aside after the party election. That is the culture in Umno.
“When we have won, we will move on.”
On Thursday, the former health minister said suggestions on preventing the Umno presidency from being contested were "madness and detrimental” to democracy.
"Stop this madness. I believe the president is a fighter and will not back down from facing a challenger.
"There should be a contest. Do not kill democracy in Umno," he said in an Instagram post. - Mkini
