Kedah Umno chapter today invited the party president and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to become its ‘bapa angkat' (foster father) in the Parliament.
Its delegate to the 2022 Umno General Assembly, Nor Saidi Nanyan, in his speech this afternoon said Kedah Umno no longer has anyone to represent them as none of its leaders managed to secure a seat in the recent general election.
"It is our hope that the party president could help us face the upcoming state election, which is expected to be held soon.
"We used to have Tok Det (Mahdzir Khalid) and Dato Azeez (Abdul Azeez Rahim). Kedah also used to have a representative in the cabinet. But now we do not have anyone in Putrajaya.
"We hope that the president will become 'bapa angkat' for us Kedah Umno," he said.
In the 15th general election in November, Umno did not manage to win any of the 15 parliamentary seats in the state.
Mahdzir and Azeez were the MPs for Padang Terap and Baling but failed to defend their seats in the election. Mahdzir was also a cabinet minister in the previous government.
Meanwhile, Nor Saidi also called for the party leadership to clean up the party of traitors who had supposedly betrayed Umno.
He said the last time Umno had carried out such an exercise was after it was defeated in the 14th general election in 2018.
"GE15 once again saw many from within Umno betray the party. Thus, Kedah Umno proposes that the party conduct a cleaning-up exercise as soon as possible.
"What is the point of having many members if they are not loyal to the cause? It is better to just have a small number but made of those who are loyal and won't turn their back on us," he said. - Mkini
