Navy chief feted in a retirement ceremony at Lumut RMN Base

Navy chief Admiral Mohd Reza Mohd Sany was feted by the members of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) at the Lumut RMN Base yesterday in conjunction with his retirement.

The RMN Headquarters’ Strategic Communications Branch in a statement said Mohd Reza, who took the helm of the RMN on Nov 30, 2018, will retire on Aug 13 after 42 years of service.

The statement said that during his tenure as Navy chief, Mohd Reza (above) focused on the preparedness of the RMN fleet to carry out its duties of defending the sovereignty of the nation's maritime borders without compromise, despite facing various constraints and challenging global situations.

"Several initiatives were realised during his administration, especially in terms of dealing with obsolete naval assets, including the 'Obsolescence Programme' (OP) and the Repowering Programme (RP).

"The OP aims to replace the structure (of a ship's hull) as well as its entire system, except for some legacy equipment such as cannons. The ships involved in this programme are from the Fast Attack Craft (FAC) M squadron," the statement said.

It added that as of now, one ship was in the final stages under the OP while two more would undergo the process soon, while eight ships had undergone the RP, carried out to replace the engine, gearbox and propeller as well as the power generation system for ships from the FAC (G) squadron.

"These two programmes have not only increased the operational readiness and capability of the Armada, but also become an effective initiative in supporting measures to save the country's financial resources," the statement said.

In the ceremony yesterday, various activities were carried out, including the Navy chief’s farewell parade, street lining and fleet review.
