Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) lecturer Dr Teoh Soo Huat has received the Dr Peter G Linder Award from the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) in the United States.
In a statement today, USM said Teoh is the only foreign recipient of the award which recognises the contribution of medical experts in the field of obesity.
“This award is a motivation for me to continue to play a role in this field in Malaysia,” said Teoh, who is a lecturer at the Institute of Advanced Medicine and Dentistry in USM Bertam, Penang.
“I hope to develop this field through quality clinical services and train interested doctors. This is my appreciation to the country and USM for the support given to me to pursue this field.”
He added that doctors and specialists at the institute in Penang want to help Malaysians face the serious disease of obesity through evidence-based treatments.
“We offer treatment services to obese patients such as healthy lifestyle guidance, behavioural change advice, anti-obesity medication, and bariatric surgery discussion.
“The patient data obtained can also stimulate research work to improve treatments and service standards in this field in line with the university’s function as a tower of knowledge,” added Teoh.
Teoh, born in Jelutong, Penang, has been involved in obesity medicine for the last 12 years, seven of which he served in the Health Ministry before joining USM.
Under the sponsorship of USM and the Higher Education Ministry, he also underwent obesity medicine subspecialty training in Ottawa, Canada in 2022. He was also recognised as a fellow of the World Obesity Federation in 2020.
OMA is the largest association of medical doctors who are members of those involved in the field of obesity medicine including nurses and medical assistants in improving the quality of public health affected by obesity. - Mkini
