Why were critics left out of NEAC lineup, asks academic

The council, which was announced on Thursday, will focus on reducing the burden on teachers.

PETALING JAYA: Two academics have questioned the exclusion of scholars critical of the country’s education system in the lineup of the recently announced National Education Advisory Council (NEAC).

Sahul Hamid Maiddin of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris said such scholars had, in their criticism, provided a reality check on the education system.

“Unfortunately, their voices won’t be heard. Their criticism would have a positive impact on the education system,” he said on Facebook.

On Thursday, education minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the appointment of former education director-general Amin Senin as the council’s chairman.

Other members of the council are Prof Fauzan Noordin (deputy chairman), Prof Omar Yaakob, NS Mehander Singh, Prof Noor Inayah Ya’akub, Abd Aziz Mahmud, Aminuddin Awang, Rusilawati Salleh and Chee Poh Kiem.

The council’s focus will be on reducing the burden on teachers.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lecturer Anuar Ahmad asked why senior ministry officials had been appointed to the NEAC.

He wondered if some of those in the new lineup, whom he claimed were previously responsible for adding to the burden on teachers, would now change their stance. - FMT
