PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has vowed to carry out a “total clean-up” of the party to rid it of elements that could hinder the party’s new direction, says Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.
In a Facebook post, Puad said Zahid used his special briefing to Umno delegates earlier today to assure them that he would rid the party of those who “hurl stones and hide their hands”.
“They bring harm to Umno,” said Puad.
“They can be an obstacle to the success of Umno’s new direction, which will be presented during the president’s policy speech on Friday. I strongly support this.”
Puad did not mention who Zahid was referring to when he promised a “total clean-up”.
Earlier today, FMT reported that Zahid revealed the names of the 10 MPs who signed statutory declarations (SDs) backing Muhyiddin Yassin after the general election (GE15).
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source declined to reveal the identities of the 10 MPs but said they were those who had been “expected” to back Muhyiddin, who is Perikatan Nasional chairman.
The source added that there was a commotion among those who attended the pre-general assembly briefing as Zahid listed the names.
The Umno general assembly is being held from tonight to Saturday at the party’s headquarters at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
It is the party’s annual meeting for 2022, which was postponed because of GE15.
Umno’s party elections are to be held by May, with the 2023 annual meeting to be held in the middle of this year. - FMT
