KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh will soon present a proposal to the cabinet on the management of Ramadan bazaar sites in the federal capital.
Yeoh said a press conference would be held once a decision has been reached on the matter.
"I will present it to the cabinet first; the paper has been prepared. After that, I will hold a press conference," she told reporters after chairing the inaugural Federal Territories Ministers' Council meeting at Menara DBKL today.
She was asked whether Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would fully manage business licences and maintenance for the bazaars as it did last year, or if associations would be appointed as "middlemen".
Last year, DBKL took over the full management of licence applications and site maintenance to ensure traders were charged affordable rental rates and to improve overall management.
The move followed a directive from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Jan 2, who urged local authorities nationwide to stop using agents or middlemen for Ramadan bazaar permits.
Former Federal Territories minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa had previously noted that the direct management approach was intended to address complaints regarding the high costs associated with bazaar licence applications. - NST
