PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded government members of parliament to focus on their duties and responsibilities, as well as to actively participate in debates in the Dewan Rakyat.
Unity government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that during the first two or three weeks of the parliamentary sitting, MPs would debate the Royal Address delivered by the king.
Fahmi said the bills announced by the prime minister on Jan 5 would be a priority for discussion during this parliamentary session.
"These include the bill to limit the tenure of the prime minister to no more than 10 years or two full terms, the separation of powers between the attorney-general and the public prosecutor, as well as the Freedom of Information Bill (FOI) and the Ombudsman Bill," he said after a pre-session briefing at Seri Perdana Complex today.
The briefing, which began at 2.30pm, was chaired by Anwar, who was seen leaving Seri Perdana at 4.20pm, waving to members of the media outside the compound.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi arrived at 4.05pm to attend the briefing, entering Seri Perdana after the session concluded.
The First Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament will begin tomorrow with an address by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, at the opening ceremony.
Based on the calendar on the official Parliament website, apart from the tabling of the Motion of Thanks, the Dewan Rakyat session, which will last for 20 days, will see members of parliament take part in the debate on the motion for seven days starting on Jan 20.
The session will then continue with winding-up speeches by the relevant ministers in the third week, from Feb 4 to 10. - NST
