Defend Zahid's DPM post, uphold Umno chief's 'dignity' - delegate

UMNO AGM | Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s position as deputy prime minister must be defended to uphold the dignity of the Umno president, said Kelantan party delegate Wan Mahusin Wan Zain.

He described proposals for the party to pull out of the unity government as inappropriate.

He also recalled how Zahid’s dignity was trampled on when the Bagan Datuk MP faced court charges.

“There were proposals and sentiments from delegates for Umno to leave what we have, on the grounds of dignity.

“Yes, for us, if our president today relinquishes power, we will say our president has dignity. But dignity, in terms of our president’s stance, we don’t know.

“Our president’s dignity will be lost if even branch meetings can’t afford to cook bihun.

“Today our ‘father’ has dignity because of the title deputy prime minister,” Wan Mahusin said while debating the president’s policy speech during the Umno 2025 General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

Call to leave

On Jan 3, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh bluntly urged the party to leave the unity government and become an opposition force to rebuild its strength.

Speaking at the Special Umno Youth Convention discussing Umno’s direction within the unity government in Kuala Lumpur, he had reminded party members and leaders not to fear being in opposition.

Moreover, he said Umno’s “red lines” had been crossed by certain parties within the unity government, particularly DAP.

“When the principles of cooperation begin to be violated, our dignity is not respected, then enough is enough for Umno - let them govern this country, we become the opposition.

“Hey, Umno people are not cowards. My brothers, don’t be afraid to be in the opposition - take one step back so we can leap higher forward,” Akmal had said.

However, Akmal’s call was rejected by Zahid, who said Umno does not want to repeat past mistakes in forging cooperation with any opposition party at this time.

Zahid also said every decision must be made carefully so that Umno is not bitten by the same snake twice.

Meanwhile, Wan Mahusin urged delegates to give their full support to Zahid.

“Our father wants to fly high, to seek what is in the high places,” he added. - Mkini
