UMNO AGM | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had entrusted Umno with eight positions in his cabinet because he loves the party, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Speaking at the Umno general assembly, the deputy prime minister said Anwar truly understands the party's history and its importance in Malaysia's political landscape as he has Umno DNA.
Zahid claimed that Anwar had come under pressure from within PKR as some in the party believed their president was too yielding to Umno.
"Some people in PKR accused the prime minister of bowing to Umno's pressure, (but) we have never pressured the prime minister or asked him to step down.
"You see, Umno has 26 parliamentary seats while our friends in BN have four, but how many cabinet minister posts have we got? Eight.
"So I want to tell you that the prime minister loves us very much.
"But, even though he has Umno's DNA, that does not mean we can expect him to give us whatever we want. That is impossible... but the prime minister would try to give what we ask accordingly," he said in his winding-up speech.
Bumi agenda
For the record, Anwar used to be Umno deputy president before he was sacked from the party by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1998.
Zahid added that Anwar has given his trust to Umno to carry out the government's bumiputera agenda.
According to him, Umno's efforts for bumiputera also have not received any objection from DAP leaders in the government.
Zahid announced that Anwar even entrusted him to be the minister in charge of Felda.
"I received a letter from the prime minister yesterday saying I am being given a new responsibility as the minister in charge of Felda and FGV," he said.
