4-year-old in ICU after being knocked down by Bomba MPV

KOTA BHARU: A four-year-old girl remains in the intensive care unit of a hospital here after being hit by a Fire and Rescue Department multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) two weeks ago.

Nurul Afia Raisha Muhamad Shamsul suffered severe abdominal injuries, a fractured right shoulder, and a broken collarbone and ribs in the Jan 3 incident. The accident occurred while she was attending a department family day programme at a resort in Bachok.

Her mother, Nurul Afzan Che Ramlee, 33, said the child still requires respiratory assistance after undergoing three minor chest surgeries.

Despite showing positive signs, she remains in critical condition at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian.

Nurul Afzan, who is attached to a fire station in Pahang, said her daughter was playing in a field when she was struck by an MPV being reversed by a fireman. Several other children were also playing in the area, which had been designated for sports.

"I am deeply saddened by what happened and hope appropriate action is taken against the personnel involved. A police report has been filed to seek justice for my daughter," she said when contacted today.

Nurul Afzan said she has taken extended leave to care for the child, while her husband, Muhamad Shamsul Sulaiman, 31, a daily wage earner, takes turns with her at the hospital.

"I have been informed that an internal investigation is underway, and I am hoping for transparency," she said.

Her two other children, Muhamad Afham Syafii, 8, and Nur Afrina Shafiyah, 6, are being cared for by their father and aunt. They have been transferred to a school in Machang to allow the parents to focus on Nurul Afia.

"Every day I can only pray that she recovers. It breaks my heart to see her bedridden like this because she is an active and cheerful child," she added.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat confirmed that three police reports have been received regarding the case.

He said the police have recorded the driver's statement and investigations are being conducted under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.

The offence is punishable by up to one year in jail and a maximum RM10,000 fine. - NST
