Malay uncle gains fame for viral Nasi Lemak presentation

CAN A tourist say that he has truly visited Malaysia when he hasn’t tried the iconic Nasi Lemak? Well, that’s tantamount to visiting Paris and not eating a couple of delicious snails nestling in a funny-looking plate.

But eating isn’t enough. The famed Nasi Lemak needs a good presentation too, like a professional salesman describing the virtues of a BMW 3.0 CSL.

And that role goes to none other than a very enthusiastic Malay uncle who was caught on a video recently, explaining the Nasi Lemak to a group of Canadian tourists.

What won him the internet was his good English when describing the dish to the tourists. In the video he could be seen telling them that the rice was made with coconut, and that it came with a serving of peanuts.

The video can also be found at: https://x.com/facktura/status/2012689147094610186

Being Malaysians, we of course know this information by heart unless you happen to be born yesterday. But to hear it being explained to a group of grownups sure gives the impression like they had somehow crossed over from a different dimension.

“Peviously did he work as a flight attendant? All of his explanations are good. Calm and professional,” said @luxentX.

“It is heartwarming to see a nasi lemak seller in Malaysia explaining our local food to foreigners with fluent English. This is the exact reason why we should be at least bilingual – so we can share things about Malaysia to foreigners with pride,” @zrnam86 added.

Another netizen claimed in the comment section that the famous Youtube food blogger Mark Weins once visited his restaurant when he came to Kuala Lumpur.

And when our friendly Malay uncle scores respect points on the internet, expect him to win some fans too. For example, @facktura wondered where the exact location of the restaurant was.

From the video, viewers know that it was called Restauran Lemanjah. Fortunately, there was a helpful netizen in the form of @SyazaNadiah to show us the way.

Also, @rayluca71 pointed out that the customer service there was top notch. According to @rayluca71, the kids from the nearby Tahfiz school also come here to have their breakfast.

If a group of tourists from far away across the other corner of the world comes here to have a taste of authentic Nasi Lemak, we think there really is no excuse not to try it out ourselves. —  Focus Malaysia
