GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Public Works Department (PWD) has announced that Jalan Kenyalang 1, involving a side lane in Bayan Lepas, has been closed for six days starting today, following the discovery of a sinkhole in the area.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page today, Penang PWD said the road would remain closed until Jan 25 as a road safety precaution to protect motorists.
"Road users in the affected area are advised to cooperate throughout the road closure period, drive cautiously, plan their journeys accordingly and comply with instructions from the authorities," the statement said.
Meanwhile, Penang Infrastructure, Public Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, when contacted, said the sinkhole was detected at 9.30am.
He said further investigations into the incident are currently underway.
The sinkhole measures approximately 2m in length, 2m in width and about 1.7m in depth.
"At this stage, the main road remains unaffected, with only the side lane being closed.
"Initial measures have been taken, including the installation of plastic barriers to block the road in both directions, as well as excavation works to determine the exact cause of the sinkhole," he added. - NST
