Leaders from the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement will join tomorrow’s protest against MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki outside the commission’s headquarters in Putrajaya.
Citing the deaths of Teoh, a former DAP political aide, and Selangor customs assistant director Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamed, the association’s chairperson Koong Hui Yein claimed that entrepreneurs have now become the next target of MACC.
This follows a Bloomberg report alleging that MACC, including senior officials, colluded with certain business figures to oust rivals and orchestrate corporate takeovers.
“Enough is enough. The people of Malaysia must stand united to say ‘no’ to a MACC that operates above the law without accountability.
“We must tell Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that lawbreakers must face legal sanctions and that the reform of the MACC cannot be delayed any longer,” Koong added in a statement.
Urging the public to join the rally to send a stern message to the government, he said: “We demand an end to the torture of innocent, law-abiding citizens under the guise of investigations.”
Denials and calls for RCI
Despite MACC’s repeated denials of the “corporate mafia” allegations, various quarters, including DAP, are pressing for the establishment of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate the matter.
The government has formed a separate task force, headed by Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar, to probe Azam’s shareholdings.

The MACC chief commissioner has denied any wrongdoing, while the commission insists it is the target of a deliberate smear campaign.
Tomorrow’s rally is being spearheaded by businessperson Albert Tei, who exposed the Sabah mining scandal, and activist Lee Wai Hong.
When the Anwar-led Pakatan Harapan was in opposition, they also participated in a similar rally against Azam over an earlier shareholding scandal.
However, since becoming prime minister, Anwar has renewed Azam’s tenure three times, citing his courage in tackling high-profile corruption cases.
Critics, on the other hand, accuse the prime minister of following in the footsteps of his predecessors, with MACC being weaponised against political rivals while allies are shielded. - Mkini
