Hamzah faction backs new PN chief

Newly minted Perikatan Nasional chairperson Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has received the backing of sacked Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin and 18 other lawmakers aligned to Hamzah.

The 19 MPs, including former and current Bersatu leaders, said they believe PN made the right decision in choosing Samsuri and will give him their full support.

"This appointment was a serious consolidation that PN is ready to serve the rakyat and build this country.

"In our capacity as elected MPs, we will continue to support PN under the leadership of PAS as its core party," they said in a joint statement yesterday.

Others who signed the statement are Bersatu vice-president Ronald Kiandee (Beluran), former Bersatu Women chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah), former Bersatu supreme council member Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (Tanah Merah), Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu), Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Tasek Gelugor), Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (Kubang Pasu), Muslimin Yahaya (Sungai Besar), Abdul Khalib Abdullah (Rompin), and Khlir Nor (Ketereh).

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang), Zakri Hassan (Kangar), Roslan Hashim (Kulim Bandar Baharu), Fathul Huzir Ayob (Gerik), Azahari Hassan (Padang Rengas), Nordin Ahmad Ismail (Lumut), Kalam Salan (Sabak Bernam) and Islahuddin Abas (Mersing) also supported Samsuri’s leadership.

The statement came shortly after the PN supreme council held an extraordinary meeting yesterday, where it decided to accept Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation as coalition chairperson and appoint Samsuri, who is PAS vice-president and Terengganu menteri besar, as his successor with immediate effect.

Hamzah and many of the MPs were among a slew of Bersatu members terminated from the party two weeks ago, a move seen as a purge by Muhyiddin against the Hamzah camp.

Bersatu has 25 MPs, with Hamzah claiming that he has the support of 19. - Mkini
